In life there are a lot of storms. Flexibility is what will help us to get through without feeling stuck and stressed.
Being from Jamaica, I’ve seen many storms and have witnessed trees snapped, broken and uprooted from the ground because of their rigidness. On the other hand, trees like the bamboo have withstood the storms many times despite the severity of the wind. Why? The bamboo is flexible. If we are flexible, we too can withstand storms that blow our way. Things change and we know that change is a must!
So, what is flexibility? Flexibility means to move with; to flow and be capable of changing to be more progressive.
On the other hand, when you are inflexible – you are rigid; predictable and unwilling to adapt to change. That means you normally do the same thing over-and-over even when you know that the methods used didn’t produce any results. That, my friend, is insanity.
Being flexible is where you will have to be open to change and new information. In today’s information age we live in a time where change seems to happen often and rapidly. If we are too rigid in our methods we remain stagnant. Stagnation is being still, and if you are at a stand still, that means no growth is taking place. It was Zig Ziglar who said, “Be firm on principle but flexible on method.” What he is saying is that you don’t have to change your values or your goal, just the approach that you have been using to reach your particular goal. For example, you may be in the habit of putting flyers at every coffee shop in town to advertise your business, but the way social media has taken over you have to consider using a new method.
Most compelling evidence of change is with technology. The rate at which change occurs on the internet forces us to put our best plans together, because a new and unexpected development could arrive at any moment. If you can be flexible in your thinking and actions you will be able to move with the flow of things. Bruce Lee must have known what it meant to be flexible when he stated these words, “Empty your mind, be formless, shapeless – like water. Now you put water into a cup, it becomes the cup, you put water into a bottle, it becomes the bottle, you put it in a teapot, it becomes the teapot. Now water can flow or it can crash. Be water, my friend.” Never get too locked in with one way, because at anytime the situation can cause for you to be a cup and next a teapot, so make adjustments as needed.
Furthermore, change can cause most people to develop stress, especially when they are fixed and rigid in their opinion of how things should be. This is what happens, when you are fixed in your thinking you will only put pressure on yourself, and pressure causes stress. If you become more open-minded and willing to accept new strategies, you won’t have to worry about things going “the right way”. With this in mind, knowing that flexibility is important in us becoming more successful in our business, personal and professional lives, we have to learn to make adjustments to suit each situation.
We learned earlier that flexibility means to flow with. So when challenges come we will be more able to face them and come out victorious. Equally, being flexible can reduce stress in the sense that you will know and expect that change will happen and welcome the fact that changes have to be made.
Being flexible will help you to get more out of life! Be flexible my friend!
