90 Day Challenge: Day 73 – Reaching Out To The Successful (What To Know Before You Do)

Why are we reluctant in reaching out to people who are successful? For some people, it’s because they think they are going to say “no” to their request. Others, like myself at one point, are concern that because the successful person does not know them they should not reach out.

To reach out is your best bet on making the connection. However, what you do before reaching out can decide how well the meeting turns out.

I will let you know this upfront; some will say ‘no’, but that doesn’t mean you should not take the initiative to reach out. In fact, you may have to reach out several times before you get through to the person you are trying to reach. Keep trying because, making several attempts may serve you greatly. Why? Successful people like people who are persistent.  Persistence is admirable!

Be reminded, “Success leaves clues”.

Before you reach out you should do your research about the person you are trying to have a connection with. Why that is important? Successful people don’t want you to waste their time. Also, they prefer to answer or give advice in the areas that they are expert in. Remember, they don’t know you to have a casual conversation, so it is best to do your research before you decide to meet. You should prepare yourself if you want to be taken seriously.

Successful people love to share what they know.

For that reason, you should be prepared to ask questions. In fact, you should be asking specific questions. I have blundered with this before where I blew a chance that I had to speak with someone successful and because of lack of preparation I didn’t take full advantage of the opportunity. You may have heard, “If you learned from the experience, it wasn’t wasted” and I did. For you not to make the same mistake as I did, jot down a few questions to ask before you decide to meet or speak with the successful person you are reaching out to.

If you have done your research before reaching out this next part will be easier to carry out. You want to know exactly what you want to say. However, even with the preparation at times you might not get the connection you have hoped for and that’s on both sides. But if you ask the right questions you’ll get some good advice because you asked the relevant questions. That being said, don’t be afraid to ask or seek advice from those who are successful. Remember, you need to know exactly what you want to say.

Furthermore, their success didn’t just happen; they have done the work necessary to reach the level of success that you admire.

To remind you: Your success awaits you!

  1. Richard, you are absolutely right on with you comments here today!

Years ago I made a conscious decision that if I wanted to realize success of my own I had to connect with and expose my own potential to those who have achieved success in their own endeavours. When you have a high level of confidence in your own potential, your own capabilities, you MUST reach out to those that can help show you best practices to achieve the results they have achieved themselves. They love success stories and want you to be part of that story too.

Those who are highly successful today had to start their journey by taking their position at center stage to audition their talents. They had to reach out by sharing their potential with those of influence and decision.

Most successful people love to share their success with others and are willing to share how they got where they are today. Successful people have a common denominator…they are highly driven, disciplined, perfection oriented, and ‘will not settle for less than the best’.

Success takes time…there can be no misconceptions about that. BUT, as Richard has pointed out, we cannot be afraid to reach out to those who ARE successful. We have to get past self-doubt and feeling intimidated, hesitant or unworthy to connect with a successful individual. They too are human beings that also had to start somewhere. It is what they did along their path to success, and how they did it, that brought them to where they are today.

I have some very high profile clients today because I got past my hesitation to ‘connect with success’. If you believe in yourself, believe deeply, heart and soul to the very core of your existence that you have a gift, a great potential…unwrap that gift and share it for the world to see.

Don’t forget…successful people naturally gravitate to others who have the same potential. Discovery does not come knocking at the door…you have to take a deep breath, step forward and shake the hand of success…and realize that success as your very own.

“Hi, my name is Don MacIver and I want to be…like YOU!”
