10 Valuable Traits That I’ve Developed by Being an Athlete

You don’t have to make it to the professional level in sports to benefit greatly from being an athlete. In fact, I can boldly tell you that being an athlete is more than pushing our bodies through exhaustion, it is more so a preparation for life. Furthermore, bear this in mind; you don’t AthletePotentialhave to have exceptional talent to decide that you want to be an athlete. I have friends who had more talent than me, but not the guts. Although I would not consider myself an athlete with exception athletic prowess, but one day I realized that I have something and that was the beginning of my quest. I say that to say, you can train in order to get what you want out of the little you were blessed with. I was able to receive a scholarship.

1.   Mental Toughness

Being an athlete mentality tough is essential in order for us to make any progress whatsoever. Being an athlete is pushing yourself beyond limitations and a weak mind will give up. I found that the body can always go a little further. Therefore, it is through a consistent effort that an athlete is able to develop his or her mental toughness.

2.    Discipline

As an athlete being discipline is essential and it is a valuable deciding factor on you getting more out of your ability. In fact, it is the bridge between goals and achievement. You may have seen talented athletes who was lacking this very important ingredient we call discipline, and they eventually missed opportunity they could have easily receive. Being discipline will give you the edge.

3.   Teamwork

We always need support and it doesn’t matter how good/talented we are. My first time seeing the real effect of teamwork was when I was in grade nine in high school. This was my third year doing track and winning was not predicted for us unless we work as a team. Unity is strength. Everybody turnout that day even athletes who said they weren’t going to take part. I won all my races that year, but I could not make the team win it was our effort that gave us victory. You may have heard the saying, Together Each Achieve More and that is true.

4.   Responsibility

You have to be willing to do your part. As an athlete being responsible is knowing that doing what is required should not be put off, just because no one is monitoring us on a specific day. A teacher in high school once told me, “if it’s to be it is up to me” and that is been responsible. I get busy training because no one was going to do the work for me.  In fact, the price of greatness is responsibility.

5.   Self-Motivation

It was being an athlete was the first that help me to realize that going beyond limitation is possible. Furthermore, when you know that you are now capable of doing and not only doing, but become more you will eventually become self-motivated. I realized that I didn’t have to be the best but put my mind to the test. The encouragement I receive always was to believe I can. Self-motivation begins when you can tell yourself that you can, but remember, you don’t to be able to at the onset, but your believe will kick in sooner or later.

6.   Goal Oriented

As athlete we always have goals to accomplish, be it large or small. There is always something to aspire to. That is, either running faster, getting stronger, being more flexible but we always have some other mountain that we want to conquer. Having the goal is what help us to stay focus and staying focus helps us to have better control of where we going. Goals are what inspires us and when we reach/accomplished a goal as athletes we set another one. Goals give you something to hold on to, something to motivate you and something to inspire you. Be goal oriented.

7.   Focus

As an athlete being focus is what prevents the unnecessary distractions. What happen over a period of time of staying focus the practice becomes a habit and it’s a habit that helps us in life after the competition ends. A focus athlete goes beyond limitations as his or her sight is no longer on the challenges at hand, but the vision that was set. As a focus athlete we don’t allowed what is not attained today, stop us from achieve what we know we can.

8.   Determination

As an athlete I have realized that you don’t have to be the best to get a more favorable result. I got more out of being an athlete because I was more determined that some of my other counterpart. The funny thing about determination, you’ll start to realize potential that you never thought you have. Being determined will expose you to yourself. There is always untapped potential.

9.   Leadership

Being an athlete teaches me to lead by example. Leading by example for me was not to be a quitter. A quitter is not a leader and even if the going got tough, as an athlete I know that I will have to get tough in return. I also know that I have no one to blame but myself especially if I didn’t do the work. It is always my responsibility.

10. Self-Belief

You will have to believe in yourself. As I was told that it is not always the most talented athlete who often does best, but the one who believe in his or herself. That can be  the differences between winning and losing. Believe in yourself!

These traits that I have learned from being an athlete are still a part of my life today. They are valuable and the thing about these traits they can be developed overtime. Remember, you don’t have to be the best in whatever you plan to when you start out doing it, but it will be left up to the traits you decide to develop over a period of time.
